Her gaze told me she knew I kidnapped her baby...

She stared at me through the window, her knowing eyes searching for any sign of her baby. She was still a new mother with her three babies. I had kidnapped one. Her gaze told me she knew.

I had done the right thing, hadn't I? Then why did I feel sick to my stomach?

It was a chilly winter night. Icy gusts clawed at anyone without a home. I had done my best to make the mother and her babies a passable nest in the cluttered garage. It wasn't warm. Yet I've spotted her and one of her babies taking shelter inside. So it had to be better than fending the frost outside. And I made sure there was always enough food for all of them.

I sneaked to the garage yesterday morning. Peaking through the little opening left for them, my gaze met hers. She was standing a few steps from the cage. Her eyes pleaded with me. I ran back to the other side of the garage, cracked open the door and caught the sight of her dashing through the opening on the other side. I inspected the cage. It seemed empty at first until I lifted the fleece blanket. One of the babies was trapped inside, prowling through the crapped cage, agitated and still in shock.
